History of

BIG Patuxent II

 

        Blacks in Government was conceived by Department of Health, Education and Welfare (DHEW) Black Federal employees at the Parklawn Building in Rockville, Maryland, Blacks In Government was organized in 1975.  In 1976, it was incorporated as a non-profit organization under the District of Columbia jurisdiction.  Since that time BIG has grown into a national organization, which now encompasses, Federal, State, County (Local) and Municipal Employees.

        BIG's goals are to promote EQUITY in all aspects of American life, EXCELLENCE in public service, and OPPORTUNITY for all Americans.

 

        In September 2000, The Patuxent River Chapter II of Blacks In Government received from CO, NAS “recognition as an independent private organization on board Naval Air Station, Patuxent River, MD”.    The memo also reads  “as a Type 2 private organization, you are entitled to utilize common space on the installation for occasional meetings without any cost to your organization”,  however, the organization is required to be self-sustaining.
