MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear BIG Members:

Thank you for visiting our Website today.  Below, I have provided a little history of our organization and a list of goals during my term in office.

BIG’s Mission is to promote excellence, equity, and opportunities for African Americans through advocacy, professional development and empowerment at all levels of the government.

BIG’s Vision is to be recognized as a member focused, world-class enterprise (business like), with supporting infrastructures that are competitive and centered around excellence.

BIG’s Purpose is to a pro-active national organization operating with the federal sector governments to educate and promote equal employment opportunities in the areas of recruitment, hiring, training, work assignments, promotions, career and professional development, upward mobility and other work related concerns.

The BIG NIH Chapter was chartered on September 4, 1982 and is one of 300 Chapters across the country and abroad. Chapters serve as the operating arm of the organization, carrying out a variety of programs and activities to meet the local needs and concerns of African American employees at the NIH. The BIG NIH Chapter has one of the the largest memberships in this region.

The BIG NIH Chapter will focus its energies on what it will take to make BIG an efficient and cohesive organization. We maintain that we are a professional organization that serves its members, encourages and inspires excellence in others, advocate for equity in medical research, educational opportunities, workforce recruitment, and career development.  We strive to truly be the employee assistance organization we proclaim to be.

My Vision for this administration is very simple:

1.      We will Re-Build the NIH Chapter by using every available tool necessary to challenge management and to become stronger advocates for our membership. We will focus on training our leaders and our members to build BIG’s KSAs (Knowledge, Skills & Accomplishments).

2.      We will Organize our goals and re-set priorities to determine what’s important and relevant to the BIG NIH Chapter that impact our membership.

3.      We will develop resources to increase our member-participation.  We will maximize excellence, equity and opportunities, promote and advertise BIG through every media at NIH, and we will engage our members to see the BIG Picture, its benefits and services through relevant programs, workshops and guest speakers.

As we accomplish these goals, the BIG NIH Chapter will be recognized as a member focused organization centered around excellence and equity.

If you are not a member yet, please make the commitment to be apart of something BIG.  If you are a member but not an active participate, please step and be apart of the solution.

Thank For You For Thinking BIG, Supporting BIG, and Being BIG!

Sincerely,
Harold Atkins, President,
