About Us

The Columbus Area Chapter of Blacks In Government (CACBIG) was incorporated in November 1980 in Columbus, Ohio.  On April 16, 1981, the local chapter submitted an application for membership in the National BIG organization.  On that date there were 28 paid members in the local chapter.

In 1997, the Chapter had dwindled to 10 active members. Upon return from the BIG National Training Conference, Yolanda Brown-Harris, a Defense Supply Center Columbus (DSCC) Equal Employment Office (EEO) Specialist, felt a need to motivate employees to become involved.  With the support of Major General Paul Bielowicz, U.S. Air Force (USAF), Commander of DSCC, on May 1998 the CACBIG hosted a membership drive at the DSCC Officer’s Club and recruited 61 members from the federal, state and local government agencies.  In 1998, Major General Bielowicz received a BIG national honor for Special Achievement Award for his endorsement of Blacks In Government as a Command Sponsored Program.

The CACBIG is the only chapter in Columbus and surrounding area.  CACBIG is a part of Region V, which covers Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota and there are over 450 active members.  Nationally, there are over 10,000 members and 277 chapters both in the United States and overseas.
