Barbara Johnson Cox - BIG Region XI Council Second Vice President


Sheila StevensBlacks In Government Department of Labor Chapter (BIG-DOL) congratulates its member Reverend Barbara Johnson Cox on her appointment as the Second Vice President of the BIG Region XI Council, effective January 2017. BIG Region XI is comprised of chapters in the Washington, D.C Metropolitan area. In her position as the Second Vice President, Rev. Johnson Cox also serves as the Council's Membership Committee Chairperson.


Rev. Johnson Cox is the Immediate Past BIG Region XI Council Corresponding Secretary and is a member of the Council's Program & Education, Legislative, and Fundraising Committees. She is a past BIG-DOL President and has served as one of the chapter's Region XI Council Representatives for several years. She also has served on BIG National committees. Indeed, BIG-DOL is proud of Rev. Johnson Cox on her BIG accomplishments!



Retirement of Cheryl A. Sims


On Thursday, January 5, 2017, a retirement celebration was held at the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) in honor of Cheryl A. Sims, who retired from the agency with thirty-seven (37) years of Federal government service! Mrs. Sims received congratulations at the celebration for her exemplary service from William Wiatrowski, BLS Acting Commissioner; her immediate supervisor Ronald Kidd; co-workers; family members and friends; and the Blacks In Government Department of Labor Chapter (BIG-DOL). Mrs. Sims is a longtime and dedicated BIG-DOL member and a BIG National Life Member. She has served as the Chairperson of the BIG-DOL Scholarship Program Committee since 2002. Robin D. Matthews, BIG-DOL President, read a resolution of commendation and recognition from the chapter, highlighting Mrs. Sims' service to BIG and the government. Ms. Matthews also presented the honoree with a card, monetary token, and book of pictures of her involvement with chapter activities throughout the years. BIG-DOL congratulates Mrs. Sims on her well-deserved retirement and is fortunate that she remains active in BIG!







BIG-DOL Leaders Receive BLS Diversity Awards


On Wednesday, October 19, 2016, Robin Matthews, Dr. Sidney Samuel, Lisa Hawkins, and Nathaniel Howard received Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Diversity Awards at the BLS Innovation and Awards Ceremony held in the agency's Janet Norwood Conference and Training Center. The BLS Diversity Awards recognize individuals or groups who have demonstrated consistent and exemplary efforts in improving workforce diversity and promoting inclusion and non-discrimination in the Bureau. When recognizing the four BIG-DOL leaders, who are also BLS employees, Deputy Commissioner William Wiatrowski expressed the agency's appreciation for the recipients coordinating the chapter's Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey (FEVS) promotional event held on June 7th to encourage BLS employees to complete the survey and thus increase the agency's FEVS response rate. Nathaniel Howard has also assisted many BLS special emphasis groups with their programs held throughout the years. BIG-DOL congratulates Robin Matthews (President); Dr. Sidney Samuel (First Vice President); Lisa Hawkins (Second Vice President); and Nathaniel Howard (Immediate Past Second Vice President), on their distinguished honor!





Sheila Stevens - BIG National Military Veterans Emphasis Committee Member


Sheila StevensBlacks In Government Department of Labor Chapter (BIG-DOL) commends Sheila Stevens for her service as an active member of the BIG National Military Veterans Emphasis Committee (MVEC). At the 2016 BIG National Institute held in Atlantic City, New Jersey, she served as the Hostess Committee Chairperson for the Military Veterans Emphasis Programs held on Wednesday, August 24th.


This committee accommodated the presenters and participants with materials and handouts which helped them to assimilate the information being provided during the programs. Moreover, Ms. Stevens, a U.S. Army veteran, has devotedly served in BIG-DOL for over four years!

Dr. Ladel Lewis: Making an Impact


Dr. Ladel LewisBlacks In Government Department of Labor Chapter (BIG-DOL) is very proud of Dr. Ladel Lewis, who joined the chapter in 2015, and her recent accomplishments. Dr. Lewis is an active member of the BIG National NOW Generation Program Committee. The NOW Generation focuses on programming for young professionals of BIG under the age of 40 looking to enhance their success and become leaders in the workplace.

Furthermore, Dr. Lewis won first-place in the Blue Ridge Region (BRR) Speech Contest held during the BRR Conference in Charlottesville, Virginia in June 2016. BRR is one of the regions of International Training in Communication (ITC) - an international organization that provides training and coaching in communication and leadership skills. Dr. Lewis will go on to compete at the ITC International Speech Contest in Seattle, Washington in 2017. She also placed in the BRR Writing Contest in three categories: First Place - Fiction; Second Place - Poetry; and Second Place - Non-fiction. She not only participated in the contests but also served as a presenter at the BRR conference of the workshop "Network Like a Pro: Utilizing Effective Communication Skills for Positive Engagement." Dr. Lewis is a senior research strategist at Meaningful Evidence, LLC - an organization that assists non-profits in program evaluation, policy research, organizational development, and strategic planning. BIG-DOL applauds Dr. Lewis as she continues to soar!

Dr. Jennifer A. Smith: Doctor in the House!!!


Dr. Jennifer SmithDr. Jennifer A. Smith received her Doctorate of Medicine degree from Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois in May 2016. Dr. Smith is specializing in Neurology and will be completing her residency at Northwestern University Hospital. She is the daughter of D'Juna Smith, a Bureau of Labor Statistics employee and a Blacks In Government Department of Labor Chapter (BIG-DOL) supporter. BIG-DOL is very proud of Dr. Smith - a 2008 BIG-DOL Scholarship Program award recipient!



Carolyn Raines - BLS 2016 Interagency Statistical Mentoring Program Mentee


BIG-DOL Leadership with LiaisonThe Interagency Council on Statistical Policy launched a successful cross-agency pilot mentoring program in 2015. The goal of the program is to pair experienced staff mentors with mentees in other agencies for career development. The mentees meet regularly with their mentors to discuss a variety of topics to enhance technical and non-technical skills. The 2016 mentoring program includes five mentees from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), including Carolyn Raines, an active member of Blacks In Government Department of Labor Chapter (BIG-DOL)! Carolyn's mentor is a supervisory mathematical statistician at the Energy Information Administration. According to Carolyn, together they "have worked on specific, measurable goals to enhance [her] leadership, oral communication, and facilitation skills". Retirement of Dr. Gwendolyn J. Bridgett


BIG-DOL Leadership with LiaisonDr. Gwendolyn J. Bridgett retired with 38 1/2 years of dedicated service to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) on May 28, 2016. Dr. Bridgett worked as an economist in the BLS International Price Program. On Thursday, May 26, 2016, a retirement reception was held at BLS in her honor. She was recognized for her exemplary service by her supervisors and co-workers, the American Federation of Government Employees-Local 12, and Blacks In Government Department of Labor Chapter (BIG-DOL). Dr. Bridgett is a longtime and dedicated BIG-DOL member and a BIG Gold Plus Life Member. She has also served several years as one of the chapter's BIG Region XI Council representatives. Conveying well wishes to Dr. Bridgett from all levels of BIG, Dr. Sidney W. Samuel, BIG-DOL First Vice President, extended congratulations from Darlene Young, BIG National President; read a congratulatory letter from Marion Allen, BIG Region XI Council President; and presented a card and token from BIG-DOL. BIG-DOL congratulates Dr. Bridgett on her well-deserved retirement from Federal government service and is fortunate that she will remain active in BIG!
